Here's the thing...I have no idea what they would "return" to.
WRC? Not seeing it. They don't currently have a car that would be competitive and they don't have to legitimately get back into it for a long time...they can keep flogging the rally heritage (just like Audi) without having to compete and they .
LMP? Ummm, stranger things have happened I guess...this is getting a lot more visibility as of late and would extend their engineering "cache" to other realms (which is good from a consumer standpoint).
Grassroots (ala Mazda)? That could be interesting...

Wouldn't motorsports also be too expensive? I don't get it.

Perhaps - if they partner with a team then they can get a program together in a less expensive series for...a lot less than retooling lines or building/sharing factory space.
In any case, they haven't been doing WRC in what, 6 years? 6 of the most trying years in the auto industry and they have grown by leaps and bounds in the top market (US)...I'm not sure racing really adds much value to the brand at the moment compared to things like safety, AWD, small engines, and "love" or whatever it is they that the give you a dose of at the dealership.

Outside of what they're doing with RA/GRC, they most likely wouldnt focus that much on rallying. The way I see it, they're making a stronger push towards endurance racing, what with the GT300 BRZ and SP3T STI.

There is also a CTSCC team running a WRX. I could see them putting a car into CTSCC or TUDOR.
